2008 Marching Band Archives

Jamboree 2008

Thank you to everyone who supported the DHS Marching Band at the Jamboree.  We experienced many "firsts" at our 25th Silver Anniversary Jamboree.  With strong wind gusts and driving rain, our show was forced indoors.  Plan B became a reality as the Jamboree Committee plotted a new course of action.  Due to lots of hard work and the cooperation and flexibility of  all of our volunteers (thanks to the many alumni parents who helped out), our indoor Jamboree was a success.  We hosted 14 area bands at an inside show.  The show ran smoothly.  The makeshift concession/cafeteria in the gym kept hungry people happy.  Even the fire alarm that forced everyone out of the building (another first) didn't dampen anyone's spirits.  All of the bands were great!  The final awards ceremony featured proclamations by Mayor Mark Boughton presented to Band Aids president Tally Maffucci, CT State Representative Jan Geigler presented to Band Director Nick Albano, and Senator David Cappiello presented to Principal Karen Rezendes, all in honor of our 25th Jamboree.

Many thanks for all of the donations of goods and services from area businesses.  Many thanks for our advertisers. And many thanks to all the supporters of our Danbury High School Marching Band!  Be sure to watch for us in the MAC Championships on November 8th

Wow!  What a difference a week makes.  Even though they performed uncontested this week in Class IV, there was no slacking off.  The band exuded great energy and sustained it to the very end.  The new uniform accessory in the Pit (matching bandanas) made a nice statement.  The instrument wave was so well timed.  The guard performed their hearts out, even through injuries sustained on the field.

The weather was absolutely perfect for the evening events.  The temps were in the high 50's and the sky was clear.  Hopefully, Mother Nature will treat us to the same in 2 weeks.

It was great to see all 4 Class IV bands in competition this week.  Danbury ended up in third place this week behind the 2 first place bands by only 1.5 points.  The competition is hot.

This week, the weather was perfect for the evening activities.  Not a raindrop in sight.

Scores for New Milford posted

The scores from the New Milford show can be found on the Musical Arts Conference website.

New Milford was lucky that the rain held off so they were able to host the show outdoors.  The other venue, Naugatuck, held an indoor show.  Sitting on wet bleachers was not ideal, but the misty rain did not seem to affect the performance of the bands.  They all did an outstanding job in the damp conditions.  At least it was warm!

Danbury continues to improve, with a score improvement of 3 1/2 points over last week!

Hard work really pays off.  The band performed the entire show including the Jupiter section.  The DHS Marching Hatters improved more than 5 points since the last show!  And this is only the beginning of the season.  It will only get better from here.

This week, the weather was perfect.  Cool and crisp.  Although, in the last hour, it seemed that the temperature dropped about 10 degrees.  While waiting for the scores, everyone had the opportunity to keep warm by dancing to the music  of "YMCA".

In closing, the encouraging  words of Princess say it the best:  "Woof woof, woof woof woof". (An airgram enjoyed so much by the judges that they read it twice.)

The Brien McMahon show started off with beautiful end-of-summer weather.  It was quite warm and humid.  A great night to start the competition season.  Seeing the new shows and which bands were in which class was exciting.  There was a nice crowd of spectators in the stands.  The calls for 50-50 and the announcements of the air-grams was very familiar.

Danbury did a great job.  With 3 of the 4 planets being performed, it was an excellent show eliciting many oohs and aahs from the crowd.  And the end result was 2nd place, less than 2 points behind our only competition - Newtown!  And kudos to the percussion section for the Outstanding Percussion caption award!

Unfortunately, the rain showers started during Norwalk, then stopped shortly afterwards.  Then the skies opened up when Brien McMahon was performing their show in exhibition.  The stands cleared, leaving about 50 die hard spectators, drenched.  Some stayed under umbrellas or shower curtains.  Others fled for the not-to-dry area underneath the bleachers.  Sacred Heart University Pioneer Band performed their show to those remaining in the stands, but  were soaked to the skin.

The award show was cancelled.  A great decision considering, although the rain stopped just as the bands assembled in the dry Brien McMahon cafeteria were released to the buses.  A great (though wet) time was had by all!
