General Meeting Minutes February 6, 2007

Meeting came to order at 7:15pm

Thank you to all the people who helped with the band fest. Things went wonderful. Eileen Alberts sent a great email to Dr. Glass saying what a success it was. All the kids being combined together at the end of the band fest worked out very well.

Jeff Hull -Treasurers Report: At this current time we are under budget for income. We are fine financially right now especially with Notable Night and Butter Braids coming up. Scholarships will be our next major expense. The checkbook at this time is very healthy.

Diane Farbman: Website is up and running. Donna Bellamy has sent in pictures and information on the guard for this season and we hope to get it up on the website soon. Any information that anyone has, please feel free to send in. The next Script order will be due on the 1st of March. We hope to be able to distribute the cards at the Band Aids meetings if possible. There are many new stores participating with this, take advantage of it. Wide range of things. Pizza Uno is also participating so you can double dip on this one and no one can say anything. Plan ahead for these things to take the most advantage of the dollars that can be earned. Should we consider ordering some cards ahead of time so we have it on hand when we need it? What is the feeling amongst the parents? Most feel it is good to have a few on hand. Let’s try and get a short list of stores frequently used and see how it goes.

Donna Pasquence - Butter Braids: Packages have been distributed and the kids should be selling at this time. Orders are due on Thursday the 8th of February. Delivery will be on March 1st. Pick up time to be announced.

Pizza Uno- Thursday February 8th is the next scheduled Pizza Uno night. We may possibly have one more later in the year. We are allowed three scheduled nights in one year.

Winter Guard: The kids are working very hard. Five of the nine students are new to the program. Most of these kids just began learning in the fall and now are doing much better. It would be great to see some of the parents at the guard competitions. Donna Bellmay has been there every step of the way for the guard kids. Donna is trying to organize a bottle drive in the near future. The profits from the bottle drive go to the guard for the cost of the program. We may schedule this for once a month on a Saturday. We may try to leave a secure container at local grocery stores to encourage people to donate their can receipts to the marching band. Floor crew has been great and has helped out tremendously with the guard program. We still need more guard parents to get involved with the program. Donna and just a few other parents are doing all that they can and could really use the help.

A Notatable Night is scheduled for April 12th. Everyone does a great job from the parents to the kids. Committees need to be set up and encourage all to help out. We have set and all time high goal for this year of $15,000.00! We need donations for the silent auction. Many people are already donating things. Currently Jean and Tally are looking for a car and a flat screen TV to be donated. Wouldn’t that be wonderful if that could be accomplished! We can assemble gift baskets together of almost anything that is donated no matter what it was. We need people to help out with phone calls, set up and clean up. Day of event decorating will start between 1-2 till about 5 and then dinner starts, clean up and out by 11.

Uniforms: A couple of weeks ago Jean presented to the Board of Ed a proposal seeking their help to try and obtain new uniforms for the Marching Band. Jean presented a few different options on ways that the Board of Education could assist the band in their quest to replace the old uniforms that have seen better days. A financial package was presented on how things could be financed through a few different options. The marching band was prepared to put down approximately $20,000.00 that had been raised through various fundraisers but we needed the help of the Board of Ed to help up with the rest of the expense of the uniforms. After a deal of discussion and a vote it was agreed that the Board of Ed would be able to help the band with the remaining cost of approximately $36,000.00. We would all like to thank Eileen Alberts for her hard work and determination with the matter. She has been a huge asset to the band. We will start in the very near future with a design team to come up with several different designs that would be appealing to all in the band. The kids will have a voice in this process. Sarah Ragowski, Matt Hsiung, Jen Ortiz and Chelsea Langford will represent the kids in the band. Eileen Alberts, Tally Maffucci, Karen Wheaton, Jean Sander and Nick Albano will be the adults working with the kids to come up with a design for the new uniforms. We need to be in contract by April 15th to be in uniforms by September of this year. This is very aggressive and we need to get ideas flowing. We know we are not going to be able to make everyone happy, so we will need to work together. We are planning for 120 students, with an increase of 10 per year. We need to explore this once we have our hard numbers of kids. We are going to try and sell our old uniforms through the uniform dealer on Ebay if possible; this will generate more funds for the band. Many bands do not have any budget, so this could help them out. We will look into this. Can kids purchase the old uniforms? Maybe we will look into this possibility if kids are interested. Then new uniforms will be cared for by the band, not the students. This will help to keep them in much better shape and they will not be allowed to go home with the students like previous uniforms.

February is not too soon to start thinking about the Executive Board. We have several senior parents leaving that occupy spots on the board and these spots will need to be filled. Many committees that are in place now will have senior parents leaving. It would be great to have freshman and sophomore parents step forward and get involved in the band process. It is a great way to get involved with your kids and get to know other band parents. Scholarship committee needs to get underway soon to start the process for the upcoming graduating class.

Nick Albano – Band Director’s Report: Winter Percussion. Not sure where he is at right now. Music was handed out to everyone and we are trying to put this together. A few of the pieces were a little much to do once a week. Kids were more on their own and he found that he really had to keep after the kids. This isn’t working quite the way he wanted. Nick still staying on track but has lessened some of the pieces and is focusing on just a few pieces. A few of the kids performed last night at band fest and did very well. We have a few more groups being put together. Winter Percussion is scheduled to perform on the trip to Canada, spring concert and then to the local middle schools.

Toronto Trip: Last payment for the trip is due on Feb 1st. $540 per student $400 per chaperone with $160 additional for private room. Trip is April 26-29th. The students will miss school on Thursday & Friday.

Music Program for the 2007-2008 school year has changed. Symphonic / Concert Band in school. Concert Band: Performance will be band fest, holiday and spring concert. Concert Band will be geared towards students who have an interest in music. Symphonic Band will have a requirement to be in Marching Band. Students will have a more in depth curriculum. Performances will include: band fest, holiday and spring concert and also the spring trip. Concert Band will not be participating in the spring trip.

Music will be geared towards kids ability, whether they are in concert or symphonic. Teaching will be the same. Level will vary due to abilities.

Disney is definitely scheduled for next year. Symphonic Band will be the only ones going on this trip to perform. Concert Band will not be participating on the spring trip anymore.

8th graders will not be eligible to participate this year in marching band. Donna Bellamy raised the question can we get guard to go to Disney next year? Nick will look into this. We need to build up the guard first. Nick wants to present the best band that we can on our trips so a few things will need to be worked out.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:25 pm. Next meeting will be announced via the website.
