What is winter guard? - Winter guard is known as “the sport of the arts.”  It brings music to life in a competitive format.  It's an exciting world of performance and entertainment; a place where pageantry involves an array of equipment, movement and skill.  Winter guard creates friendships, talents, standards of excellence, while fostering an environment where young men and women can grow, laugh, learn and meet challenges as a group.

What experience do I need to have? – None!  While having a little background in dance is a plus, you don’t need to have any experience in this activity.  Just a great attitude, a willingness to learn and be part of a team is all you need!  Our staff will teach you everything you need to know for our 2008 season!

Who can join? – Anyone in the DHS community!  There is no requirement other than you are in good standing in order to do an extra curricular activity!

When does the season start? – Our season runs November 15th through April 5th.  We rehearse Monday & Thursdays from 5:30 – 8:30 at the High School in the gym, and Saturdays from 9 – 5.  Our competition season starts on January 26th.  Competitions are on Saturday evenings.

Where do we compete and against who? – We compete at different high schools around Connecticut.  Our competitors are other high school winter guards from CT, MA, NY and NJ.  Transportation is provided by school buses to and from shows.

Is there a fee to join? – Yes.  There is a yearly due that is owed by each member of the winter guard.  The cost varies from year to year depending on the upcoming season and number of members.  The dues fee covers equipment, uniform/costume, show fees and staff.  We offer a variety of ways to fund raise this fee.  Dues are collected over a long payment plan.  If there are financial issues the staff will work with individuals on a one on one basis.

Who is on staff? – The director of the DHS Winter Guard is Mr. Nick Albano.  He is the band director at DHS.  Michele and Andrew Hanenberg have recently returned to DHS.  Both Michele and Andrew have performed and taught with groups in the top of the World Class.  They are very excited to return to DHS and can’t wait to get the season started.  Other staff members include Kristyn Ritch (Bethel Alumni) and Torrey Thomas (Danbury Alumni).

How do I join? – It’s easy.  Come to the first audition on Thursday, November 15th.  We’re meeting at 5:30 in the band room.  Just come and check it out.  You don’t have to commit to anything right away.  The first rehearsal will be more informative about the season and then we’ll spin!

What should I wear? – Clothes that are easy to move in.  NO JEANS.  Sweats, jogging pants, tees, tanks, sneakers.  Nothing too loose!  You don’t want to get your flag pole caught in it!
